GK Stories | Pioneering a Better World for Future Generations

March 22, 2022

The Guanghua-Kellogg EMBA program, which  prepares executives with Chinese business expertise and a global perspective, has attracted many students from countries in the Belt and Road Initiative. From the economic center and the key trading port of Indonesia, Jakarta, Allan Tandiono, a student from GK05, works as the Director of Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC: the Indonesia-China High Speed Railway Company) and the Vice Chairman of the Urban Mass Transport Committee at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

With decades of experience working in the infrastructure development sector, Allan has played a major role in building world-class public transport systems in Singapore and Indonesia, namely the delivery of Singapore's Downtown Line Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Indonesia's first MRT Line, and Jakarta's first Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line. Being a pioneer is not easy, but for Allan, his deepest passion of "Creating a better world for our future generations" keeps driving him forward.

A Life-Changing Decision

Allan's decision to accept an appointment to build Indonesia's first MRT line was a brave and risky one. For the appointment, Allan left an "iron rice bowl" job at Land Transport Authority Singapore and joined the Indonesian Government to kick-start the construction of their first MRT Line. Overcoming challenges along his journey, the effort paid off in the end. Allan described: "I am happy that it proved to be a correct decision, and by 2019, Jakarta finally has operational MRT and LRT systems for the residents." The establishment of MRT and LRT significantly remediated the city's traffic situation.

Much of Allan's work is related to China. Deepening his understanding of China has been a long-term interest for Allan. In 2021, Allan was appointed by the representatives from the Indonesian and Chinese Governments to serve at KCIC (Kereta Cepat Indonesia China) on the Board of Directors. Allan's work on the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway project, a landmark project under the Belt and Road Initiative, is a joint effort of the Indonesian and the Chinese governments which will improve mobility, increase productivity, and have a positive influence on the well-being of all Indonesians for many generations to come.

To deepen his understanding of China, Allan chose to study in the Guanghua-Kellogg EMBA Program (GK program) at Peking University, where he has already reaped the rewards with his appointment at KCIC. For Allan, participating in the GK program was as significant a decision for his career as his pivot back to Indonesia to help establish Jakarta's MRT.

A Lifelong Journey

Bringing together the international reputation, academic prestige and resources of Peking University's Guanghua School of Management and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, two of the top business schools in China and the United States, the GK program provides students like Allan the means to continuously improve themselves with a broader global vision, an expanded network, and empowers executives to pursue their career and life goals.

The Kellogg Global Network Week is a unique feature of the program that contributes to one's professional life and beyond. "It was a life-changing experience for me", Allan said. "I was grateful for the opportunity to network, learn and grow with insightful professors and diverse business leaders from the partner schools in Kellogg's global EMBA network."

Most importantly, the Guanghua-Kellogg EMBA's educational philosophy of "nurturing future 'high impact, low ego' leaders" is exactly what Allan is looking for to grow further. Leadership development is one of the core components of the Guanghua-Kellogg EMBA's curriculum, aiming to empower participants to achieve their full leadership potential. Allan rated the "Leadership and Organization" course as his favorite course, saying, "there were many 'Aha!' moments during the class and I have certainly applied the leadership skills taught by the professor at work ever since."

Lastly, the flexible two-year curriculum also allowed Allan to balance study, work, and family life while participating in the program.

An Empowering Community

"My goals in life have always been focused on how I can contribute more to the betterment of our society" Allan explains. "The GK EMBA program has certainly equipped me with the valuable 'high impact, low ego' values, knowledge, skills, and network to chase these life goals."

During classes, Allan shared his goals with other students. Although they come from different backgrounds, the story of taking on challenges and responsibilities to solve real-life problems to promote social development was echoed by other Guanghua-Kellogg students who share the same ambition.

"My classmates are smart, hardworking, very successful in their careers, yet fun and humble" Allan added. "I feel very lucky to be able to learn from this talented and diverse class coming from different countries, cultures, and different professional backgrounds."

With his career dedicated to public service and infrastructure development, Allan will play an important role in advancing social and economic development in society. We hope that the Guanghua-Kellogg EMBA program will continue to empower him in achieving his dreams and inspire him to explore and overcome future challenges!
